Kitchen Fitting in Cardiff
Cardiff runs from the tight Victorian grid of Cathays, Roath and Canton, through the interwar semis of Rhiwbina, Whitchurch and Llanishen, out to newer estates at Pontprennau and St Mellons, and each of those belts throws up a different kitchen. Most of our Cardiff work sits in the older stock south of the A48, where the kitchen is a narrow rear return off a hallway and nothing in the room is square. We come in on the A470, so a city job is a normal working day for us rather than a trek.

Penarth climbs from Cogan and the marina up to the Esplanade and Penarth Head, and the housing changes completely across roughly a mile of hill. Big three storey red brick villas on Plymouth Road, Westbourne Road and Marine Parade sit a few minutes from tight stone terraces down in Cogan and from modern waterside apartments built on the old dock. Much of the town centre also falls inside a conservation area, which matters far more for the outside of a house than for the kitchen inside it.

Pontypridd sits where the Rhondda drops into the Taff, and the town centre around Taff Street, the Old Bridge and Ynysangharad Park is ringed by terraces that climb straight up the valley sides. On the Graig, Graigwen and Hopkinstown the front door opens onto the pavement and the back of the house can sit a full storey lower than the front, which changes how a kitchen gets carried in before you even open a box. Out at Church Village, Tonteg and Beddau the picture flips to newer estate housing with a completely different set of problems.

Caerphilly sits in a bowl at the bottom of the Rhymney Valley with the castle and its moat in the middle of the town, cut off from the Cardiff suburbs by the mountain. Its housing is mostly two things: older terraces near the centre and along Cardiff Road, and large post-war estates spreading out through Penyrheol, Trecenydd, Hendredenny and Lansbury Park. Head north up the Aber Valley to Abertridwr and Senghenydd and you are straight back into steep colliery terrace again.

Merthyr sits at the head of the Taff valley, and the housing still follows the shape the Cyfarthfa and Dowlais ironworks left behind. CF47 covers the town centre, Penydarren and the Gurnos, CF48 takes in Dowlais, Cefn Coed, Heolgerrig, Abercanaid and the villages strung down the valley through Pentrebach, Troedyrhiw and Aberfan, and the borough reaches south east into the Taff Bargoed valley on CF46 at Treharris, Trelewis and Bedlinog. It is its own county borough rather than part of Rhondda Cynon Taf, and we work right across it.

Aberdare is the market town at the head of the Cynon valley and the biggest town in Rhondda Cynon Taf, with the shops, the market and the bus and rail interchange pulling in from the whole valley. Everything from Trecynon and Llwydcoed at the top end down through Gadlys, Robertstown, Aberaman, Cwmbach and Cwmaman sits on CF44, and the same postcode carries on up over the tops to Hirwaun, Penywaun and Rhigos. We are in the same valley, twelve minutes down the A4059, which is why Aberdare is one of the areas we work in most weeks.

Mountain Ash is where we are based, on Woodland Street by the Recreation Ground, so this is home rather than a coverage area. The town runs along the Cynon between Miskin and Newtown with Cefnpennar and Cwmpennar up on the hillside above, and CF45 carries on through Penrhiwceiber, Perthcelyn, Ynysboeth and down to Abercynon, Carnetown and Tyntetown. A good number of the jobs we do here are within walking distance of the yard, which is why we can usually call in the same day if something needs looking at.

Rhondda Cynon Taf is a principal area rather than a single town, made up of three valleys, the Rhondda Fawr and Fach, the Cynon and the Taff Ely, running from Treherbert and Hirwaun in the north down to Llantrisant and Llanharan on the flat. Aberdare and Pontypridd are the two largest towns, with Mountain Ash, Treorchy, Tonypandy, Porth, Ferndale, Tonyrefail and Talbot Green among the others. Our base in Mountain Ash sits roughly in the middle of it, at the point where the Cynon valley meets the road over to Pontypridd and the Rhondda, so no part of the county borough is a long haul.

Barry went from a village to the largest coal exporting port in the world in barely twenty years, and the housing followed the docks. That leaves a town of tight Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Holton Road, Buttrills and Cadoxton, large interwar and post-war estates at Colcot, Gibbonsdown and Cwm Talwg, and a run of new apartments and family homes built on the old dock land at The Quays. We fit kitchens across all of it, from Barry Island out to Rhoose.

Bridgend covers an unusually wide spread for one name, from the old town centre around Nolton Street and Newcastle Hill out to the 1980s Brackla estate, the newer Parc Derwen development at Coity, and on through Pencoed to the seafront at Porthcawl. What you find behind the front door changes completely depending on which of those you are standing in, and so does the kitchen fit. We work across the county borough rather than just the town itself.

Treforest sits on the west bank of the Taff just south of Pontypridd, and the University of South Wales campus on Llantwit Road sets the tone for much of the housing around it. The steep terraced streets off Park Street, Wood Road and Forest Road are heavily let to students, so a large share of the kitchen work here is landlord work booked around a tenancy changeover. Past that it runs out to Glyntaff across the river, Rhydyfelin to the south and the industrial estate at Upper Boat.

Llantrisant is really two places at once. There is the old hilltop town around the Bull Ring, High Street and Swan Street, built from eighteenth and early nineteenth century cottages on lanes such as Yr Allt that a delivery lorry cannot get up, and then there is everything below it: Talbot Green, Beddau, Pontyclun and the estates that grew up around the Royal Mint and the business park. Fitting a kitchen in one bears very little resemblance to fitting a kitchen in the other.
