Sea air is the Barry specific decision that people underestimate. Properties near the Island, the Knap and the waterfront get salt laden air and higher humidity, and cheap hinges, drawer runners and handle finishes corrode faster there than they do inland. That is a specification conversation worth having before the Howdens order goes in rather than two years later, and our honest advice is that spending on decent hinges, a properly coated or stainless handle and an extractor that genuinely vents outside is better value than upgrading the door fronts. We will say so at the survey if we think the spec is under gunned for where the house sits.

The dock era terraces set the fitting standard. The kitchen is usually a small back room or a rear outshut, the run of units is short and every millimetre of it counts, the walls are rarely square and the floors move. Howdens base units are levelled on their legs so the worktop runs dead flat, plinths are scribed to follow the floor rather than cut straight, and end panels are scribed into the wall so no tapering gap shows. On the Colcot and Gibbonsdown estates the rooms are more regular but the back door or the boiler often sits exactly where you wanted a run of worktop, which is the first thing to design around rather than the last.

Out on the waterfront the shell is square and modern and the fitting is the easy part, so access and timing take over. Deliveries generally come through a communal entrance and a lift, sometimes inside hours set by the building management, and because we book the Howdens delivery slot as the account holder we can arrange it to match. Barry is about fifty minutes from our base via the A470 and the A4232, which we build into the start time rather than into the price, and in good weather and school holidays we bring the delivery and our own arrival earlier in the day because the roads down towards the Island fill up. Most fits run five to ten working days, gas is done by a Gas Safe registered engineer and electrics by a qualified electrician.

That makes the depot coordination part of the job, from checking the plan and lead times to arranging the delivery slot and sorting any replacement parts.
