In the dock era terraces the kitchen is usually a small back room or a rear outshut, so the run is short and every millimetre of the Wren plan counts. Walls are rarely square and floors move, so base units are levelled on their legs and plinths scribed to the floor rather than cut straight, with end panels and cornice scribed into the wall so the gaps do not show. It does mean the fit takes longer than the same Wren kitchen in a new build, and that is allowed for in the written quote. Because Wren units arrive built, the other thing worth checking is the hallway, since there is no option to carry a carcass in flat and put it together in the room.

The coast is a genuine factor here and it is worth spending money in the right place. Near Barry Island, the Knap and the waterfront the air carries salt and the humidity runs higher, and cheap hinges, drawer runners and handle finishes corrode faster there than they do inland. When you are working through the Wren range, decent hinges, a stainless or properly coated handle and an extractor that actually vents outside are better value than upgrading the door fronts. A well sealed worktop upstand matters for the same reason. We will say so at the survey if we think a spec is under gunned for where the house sits.

At The Quays and Barry Waterfront the fitting is the easy part and the access is the job. Deliveries come through a communal entrance and a lift, sometimes inside hours set by the building management, and with rigid Wren units the lift internal dimensions and the corner coming out of it are what limit worktop lengths and unit sizes. We confirm those arrangements at the survey and book the Wren delivery to match. On the Colcot and Gibbonsdown estates the shell is more regular but the back door usually lands in the corner of the best run, and the gain normally comes from turning that dead corner into a shallow larder rather than from moving the door. Most Barry jobs run five to ten working days once the kitchen is on site.
