The northern valleys are overwhelmingly Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Pennant sandstone, stepped along steep hillsides with rear lanes and small back kitchens. Solid walled with no cavity, so a run of Howdens wall units needs resin or frame fixings rather than the plugs in the box, and the floors move enough that every base unit gets levelled individually. Move down into Pontypridd and Porth and the same terraces mix with larger bay fronted houses and a good deal of post war block built council stock. Rigid carcasses save a day of assembly, but they have to travel the route in one piece, so tall units and appliance housings get measured against the hallway before anything is ordered.
