Up in the old town the kitchen is usually dropped at the nearest accessible point and carried in by hand, and on a split order that happens on every delivery date rather than once. We walk the access at the survey and agree the drop point with you before anything is booked, rather than working it out on the morning. The cottages themselves have thick stone walls, low ceilings, small openings and floors that have settled over two centuries, so almost nothing is square and very little is a standard size. Units are levelled and scribed one at a time, plinths and end panels follow the floor and the wall, and wall units are packed off the stone to bring the run true. Anything passing through an external wall, an extractor duct above all, needs proper coring with a core drill and a sleeved duct rather than a hammer and hope.

Down the hill at Talbot Green, Beddau and Pontyclun the stock is mostly post-war and modern estate housing with regular rooms, level floors and plasterboard walls, which is a far more predictable fit and usually a quicker one. The trade off is size, because many of those estate kitchens are narrow galleys where the boiler, the back door and the window are all competing for the same short run. That is exactly the layout a plan drawn from customer measurements tends to get wrong, so we check the drawing against the real room before the order is confirmed. Usually the gain comes from a better layout and taller storage rather than from more floor area, and the boiler is boxed in or housed within a wall unit with a matching door unless you want it moved, which is a separate Gas Safe job.

Whichever end of the hill you are on, the rest of the Wickes work is the same. Laminate worktops are cut, jointed and fitted during the same visit as the units, with every cut edge sealed, while stone and quartz are templated once the bases are level and fitted later by the supplier. Reused appliances are measured against their new housings at the survey. Removal and responsible disposal of the old kitchen is included, and gas work is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer and electrical work by a qualified electrician, both coordinated by us.
