The big Penarth villas usually put the kitchen at lower ground level or in a rear extension, reached by a narrow stair or a back door. Wren units arrive built, so they cannot be taken down in pieces the way a flat pack range can, and a tall larder or an American style fridge housing is the thing that most often will not make the turn. We measure that route at the survey and tell you which items on the Wren plan need rethinking. Once the units are down there the work is levelling and scribing, because floors in a 130 year old house have moved and the deep skirtings, picture rails and high ceilings all want thinking about before a run is set out.

Down in Cogan and on the narrow streets off Windsor Road and Albert Road the problem moves outdoors. Larger delivery vehicles struggle with the climb and the parked cars, so a Wren drop often lands at the nearest sensible kerbside point rather than at your door, and the units get moved in by us rather than left for you to sort. At the marina the reverse applies. The shell is square and modern, the fixings are easy, but every unit, worktop and appliance has to come through a communal entrance and a lift, so the lift internal dimensions are the real constraint on what you can order. We check those before the Wren order is confirmed and agree a delivery window with the building management.

Conservation area status covers the outside of a Penarth property rather than the kitchen inside it, and parts of the town also sit under an Article 4 direction that removes permitted development rights for certain external works. Fitting Wren units, worktops and appliances internally is not what those controls are aimed at. What does need care is anything visible from outside, so we plan extractor venting to a discreet rear elevation wherever we can and tell you to check with the Vale of Glamorgan planning team before we cut anything through a front or side wall. Laminate worktop joins are cut and bolted on site; stone ordered through Wren is templated by their supplier after the bases are level, and we work around that visit.
