The advantage of Wren over a flat pack range is that nothing has to be assembled on site. The trade off is bulk. A rigid 1000mm base unit in its packaging does not turn easily at the bottom of a Cathays hallway, and a tall larder will not go past a staircase newel post without the packaging coming off first. We walk the route from the kerb to the kitchen at the survey, measure the tightest pinch point, and tell you before you order if a particular unit on the Wren plan is going to be a problem getting in. On the Cathays, Roath and Canton streets that fall under residents parking we also agree how the van and the Wren lorry are going to work, because unloading a full kitchen is not a thirty second job.

Wren draw your plan in the showroom, and a showroom does not know about the chimney breast in your back kitchen, the reveal on the bay, or the fact that a Victorian rear return narrows by 30mm from one end to the other. We check the plan against the actual room before the order goes in, which is the cheapest hour anyone spends on a Cardiff kitchen. The walls in that stock are solid brick with no cavity, so wall unit fixings, extractor ducting and any new pipe run are planned rather than improvised. Base units get levelled individually on their legs off a datum taken from the highest point of the floor, then the plinths are scribed down to follow it, so the worktop line reads dead straight even where the floor is falling away towards the back door.

Storage is the other Cardiff problem. There is rarely a garage in a terrace, so a full Wren delivery normally lives in the front room for a few days and you lose that room while it is there. We time the delivery close to the start date rather than weeks ahead and we check the order against the plan straight away, so anything missing or damaged can be raised with Wren before it stops the fit. If you have ordered a laminate worktop we cut and bolt the joins on site with a router jig; if you have gone for quartz through Wren, their supplier templates once the base units are level and fits on a later visit, and we sequence around that.
